LO2: Legal, Moral and Ethical Issues (P3, M2)
When creating media products, there are multiple issues that will need to be considered; these are:
- Legal Issues: while creating the idents a wide range of regulations will need to be checked, before making the ident, that would impact the media.
- Moral and Ethical Issues: Moral issues are personal perspectives while ethical issues are things that need to be taken into account, such as values and moral of the society.
When filming, things to be considered:
Ident 1:
- Legal Issues - During the production stage of my ident, I will look at the copyright and design and patents act 1988. The reason for this is because when filming my ident, I will need to ensure that, I don't end up copy righting any videos of any channels during the making of my ident.
- Moral and Ethical issues - When filming my ident, I will need to ensure that I get the gender in my ident to an equal standard, by this I mean that I will make sure in my ident it is equally set out and has both man and woman. This is to ensure that nobody gets offended or takes my ident into a wrong perspective.
Ident 2:
- Legal issues - During the production stage of my ident 2, I will look at freedom of information act the reason for this is so that I have permission for people that will be included in my ident. My filming is an open school setting with classrooms and will need to require permission from those that do get into camera frame while producing my ident.
- Moral and Ethical issues - When I am filming my ident, I may need to consider what music I will be using. I need to ensure that the music being used is copy right free and will not have any words that would offend anybody.
Ofcom:
Ofcom is responsible for regulating television channels. Ofcom guidelines consider the suitability of the content of Tv programmes to limit harm to audience. For examples, movies and certain idents may not be shown due to the content that is used and may not be suitable for younger children.
There are a few aspects of Ofcom, that might impact both of my idents. Some aspects are:
- Misinterpretation
- Appropriateness
- Protecting the under-eighteens: observing the watershed on televisions and music videos.
Constraints | Summarise the constraints. | Weakness - How might your work be an issue. | Action points - skills, logistics, changes to the idea |
Ofcom code of practice - Misinterpretation | Misrepresentation is when the audience is being shown a specific content and it does not match the channel. | In my idents I show a lot of empty corridors in the school building. This may be a misinterpretation which ends up leading to making the audience think that my Ident is about the school. | To ensure that my ident is not misinterpreted, I will make sure there is voice over and the ident shows that it is leading up to a science related ident. This would make my Ident clear from any misinterpretation. |
Ofcom code of practice - Appropriateness | Appropriateness is ensuring that my Idents are sensible to present on a Tv Channel. | In my Ident i film two of my classmates throughout my ident, in this i will need to ensure the correct form of clothes is worn. I will also need to ensure when using the science lab, they follow the rules of the lab so that it is appropriate. | To ensure that my Ident is not misinterpreted I will make a clear understanding of what my actors are doing is safe and make sure that they are using the right equipment with care, while in the lab. |
Ofcom code of practice - Protecting the under eighteens: observing the watersheds on television and music videos. | Protecting the under eighteens: observing the watersheds on television and music videos making sure that it is appropriate for under eighteens. | In my ident i will be filming students, in some scenes they will be using props, and I will need to ensure that they use the props in the right way, and it is suitable for under eighteen. | To ensure that this ident does not get misinterpreted i will ensure that all props used are being used correctly and it into the purpose of my ident so that it is suitable for under eighteen. |
Copyright (requirement owner, clearance costs)
| Copyright is when I am using a piece of work that is not mine. | In my ident i will use music from the channels' intro songs and these will be used off of YouTube. | In order that I don't get copyrighted, i will ask for permission before using a track or its content. |
Royalties | This is where payments are being sent, to the original owner due to use of their music. | In my idents i may have to pay for certain content that i use for my idents. | In order for me to resolve this I will need to ensure that I ask the owner if I can have a small percentage and pay them the rest. |
Misrepresentation | This is when the channel is being presented in one way, but the ident is being shown in another way. | In my Ident i might be showing certain scenes that are not related to any CBBC channels. | To ensure that this message is not misinterpreted, I will need to ensure that i show that one ident and collect audience feedback before continuing with the production and editing. |
